What was surprising, however, was that this collection excluded Devil May Cry 4, the latest game to release before Ninja Theory’s DmC reboot.

It's pretty good and feels really good to play, even for today's standards, and was the franchise's true kickstarter, and I'm not going to talk much about it. Capcom announced the Devil May Cry HD Collection at the end of last year, and given their strong focus on remasters this gen, the news hardly came as a surprise. Nonetheless, both games are decent enough to be worthy of one playthrough. In the end, the Devil May Cry HD Collection is a lazy port of a set of lazy ports from six years ago, but it is technically the best way to play two fantastic. Pros Two action classics (and one disappointment) Superb guns and swordplay combat Dazzling baroque architecture and creepy creature design Cons Only the most basic Full HD upgrade No 4K options. It also has Dante's strongest form, Majin DT, and had a real flight mechanic, but the controls were awkward as fuck. Devil May Cry HD Collection takes us back to the era of the glorious Playstation 2 to discover the genesis of Dante, presenting the first three iterations. The 3 titles are re-proposed in an excellent 16: 9 with 1080p. DMC3, which takes place first chronologically, lets Dante reveal his fun, rebel side whilst he’s much more subdued and serious in the other two. The collection of Dantes adventures in Devil May Cry HD Collection is essentially very lazy. One thing you’ll notice whilst playing is that the three games each have a vastly different tone. Some moves that later became part of styles (rainstorm, fireworks, trickster as a whole) were originally in DMC2 but executed horribly. Devil May Cry is still the ultimate hack and slash series. 2 had some very, VERY good ideas, but they were all executed pretty horribly, although that game does have some very solid moments that I think go underappreciated, like the last bossfight.

They both feel equally bad to be honest, especially once you get used to 3 or namely 4, but 1 does have a pretty sick atmosphere and a REALLY good soundtrack. 1 and 2 are irrelevant nowadays when it comes to gameplay and their writing is really subpar. As with other HD collections, the bumped up resolution on the graphics and the adjusted aspect ratio to fit 16:9 widescreens has given the games a decent visual boost.
